A Brief History Of The Gallery

Located in Madrid, The Museo Nacional del Prado is considered the main national art museum in Spain. The gallery is widely considered as having one of the world’s finest collections of European art which dates from the 12th century to the early 20th century and is based on the former Spanish Royal Collection.  It also has the single best collection of Spanish art.

The gallery was originally a museum for paintings and sculpture and was founded in 1819.  The Museo Nacional del Prado is one of the most visited galleries in the world and is also considered one of the greatest galleries of all time.

When it first opened its doors in 1819 the collection comprised of 1510 pieces including 311 paintings.  Today the collection consists of around 8,200 drawings, 7,600 paintings, 4,800 prints, and 1,000 sculptures.

What’s On Display

The Museo Nacional del Prado hosts many exhibitions throughout the year, but has a very exquisite permanent collection on display for you to view, the collection reflects the history of Spain.  All the artwork on show here is displayed in some exceptional picture frames and falls into ten categories; Saints, The New Testament & Apocrypha, Royal Portrait, Nude/Naked, Secular Portrait, Trades & Professions, The Iconography Of The Virgin, Mythological Gods & Deities, Social Realism/Everyday life, The Old Testament.

Among these categories there are some very famous highlight for the art lover not to miss, these include:

  • The Descent From The Cross by Rogier Van Der Weyden
  • The Holy Trinity by El Greco
  • Judith At The Banquet Of Holofernes by Rembrandt
  • The Dog by Francisco Goya
  • The Cardinal by Raphael

Unique Frames On Display

There are some truly stunning picture frames on display in the collection at Museo Nacional del Prado, ranging from some very plain and simple framework to some really detailed gold antique gilded frames.

You will also see on display here some very unique and truly stunning picture frames.  Three in particular are housing the following artworks:

  • The Descent From The Cross – This piece is displayed in a gilded box frame with an extended section at the top of the frame to contain the tip of the cross.
  • The Garden Of Earthly Delights – Spread across three panels this painting is displayed in a large hinged picture frame allowing for it to be displayed in various positions to tell the creative story of the piece.
  • The Adoration Of The Magi – Displayed in a three panel hinged picture frame of uniqe shape.  At the top of each panel the picture frame is shaped in a very prominent arch which gives a flow to the whole piece.

These are among but a few of the stunning frames that are on display at the Museo Nacional del Prado.
